Friends in need are friends indeed! There was a gathering of friends at our residence to help me in the contest for North east Delhi Lok Sabha seat. It was a heartening get together of 300 friends from all walks of life – academics, media, bureaucracy, business, and civil society organizations. Of course, it was a mixed group. Many were open supporters of Aam Adami Party and a few made it clear that they have come to extend their solidarity with me on the basis of long years of association. Yes, there were many who were known to me since the 1970s when I came to study at JNU in 1972. I was asked to present an overview of my campaign and what they can do to contribute towards its success. I narrated the changing political labelling and public perception of Aam Adami Party. It began with the charge of being ‘B – Team’ of BJP due to exposure about Shri Robert Wadra and the CAG report about several cabinet ministers. Then came the propaganda that it is a ‘B-Team’ of Congress as it targeted the business dealings of BJP president Shri Nitin Gadkari. It became more loud when AAP decided to enter power with unconditional support from Congress in Delhi. Soon came the third stage where both Congress and BJP charged AAP to be agent of the corporate houses. But it did not last long as there was ban by AAP government of FDI in retail trade. It got further weakened with an FIR against Amabani, Moily and senior bureaucrats. Now BJP is calling it a party of ‘urban Maoists’. Congress prefers to blame it to be Anarchists. In reality AAP is an evolving political formation which defies any labelling except a party for Swaraj through participatory democracy and against corruption at high places. The growth of AAP has been phenomenal as its membership has gone beyond 20 million persons in less than 15 months. It has been able to attract a large number of national icons which is reflected in the list of its candidates for Lok Sabha 2014. To bring together Medha Patkar, Rajmohan Gnahdi, Subhas Ware, Lingraj, Payang, Yogendra Yadav, and Ashutosh and to put up serious candidates against Rahul Gandhi, Mulayam Singh, Ajit Singh, and Sandeep Dixit is no ordinary show. Furthermore, it has initiated efforts for clean elections, clean candidates, clean money, and meaningful manifesto. Finally, there is return of good persons in political processes which may discourage criminalization of politics and politicisation of crime.
