Friends of Whātipu and their friends… Annual Whātipu Beach Clean Up Saturday 19th October starting at 10 am Please meet at the Whātipu Beach carpark for a briefing at 10am. This year’s date has been chosen to coincide with the inaugural ‘Save Kiwi Week’ running from 14th – 20th October. Friends of Whātipu are in initial discussions with the Kiwi Recovery Group and Auckland Council about the possibilities of a future release of Kiwi from Whātipu. This is an ambitious project that will require sustained effort from many parties. Initial discussions are positive. Whātipu and the dunes/swamps/bush is an ideal landscape for a Kiwi release programme. Kiwi were once present in the region. Te Kawerau a Maki are yet to be formally consulted but have been advised of our goal. Please join us for the annual FOW beach clean up. We will be walking directly to the Nine Pin rocks and then walking north along the expansive coast. Auckland Council rangers will collect rubbish bags that we leave along the way. It would be our goal to reach Pararaha Valley. An alternative walk home could be up the Muir Track and onto the Gibbons Track a 2 hour walk from Pararaha Valley. This walk could be a 5 - 6 hour return walk – though you are naturally welcome to turn back at any time. You will need to bring food and water, clothing for all weather eventualities, a fit friend and your own able body. Gloves and rubbish bags will be provided. This is an all weather event (well except for extreme weather). In August Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Conservation Volunteers NZ did a beach clean up in the main beach area of Whātipu. Whilst the beach appeared to be very clean – 166kgs of rubbish was collected! A staggering figure in what appeared to be a pristine landscape. Well done to the 50 volunteers. For this reason we will concentrate beyond the main Whātipu Beach towards Karekare. Please contact Wayne Mackenzie (Chairperson FOW and manager Whātipu Lodge) on 8118860 with any questions.
