Friends, parents, teachers... Thoughts please... R has been displaying some signs of test anxiety, despite regular studying and our knowing she is well-prepared. I had a great conversation with her teacher this morning. Ive been thinking about it since, and I have a theory. Our school uses a 1-4 system of grading, where 3 is where we want to be, meaning meets expectations, and 4 is for exceeding expectations. In theory, I can live with that. However. The practical reality is that 4 means perfect. I had a must get straight As attitude as a kid, but I could get a 95% and get an A. Getting bonus questions right could earn you 104%. On a spelling test, for example, my daughter can spell all of her regular words correctly and miss one letter of one challenge word, and thats a 3. The message is being sent that she must be perfect to earn the highest grade. I wonder if this is feeding her anxiety. I seriously question the logic of this grading system. Your thoughts please?
