Friends, these are the pictures snapped on Tuesday afternoon from Shela river of the Sundarbans east division where a oil tanker O.T. Southern Star-7 sunk with 3,57,664 liters of furnace oil early Tuesday, 9 th of December. These pictures can show us just how the water, trees, and mud of the Sundarbans has become polluted. After the capsize, furnace oil spelled out from the sunken tank.It is assumed that all the oil has already come out into the river. Due to insufficient knowledge, equipments and experience no measure could be applied yet to prevent the spell. This incident has caused an extreme environmental disaster for the coastal ecosystem and the bio-diversity of the Sundarbans, the worlds largest mangrove forest. Till today after 36 hours from the time of accident the floating oil has moved by high tide up to at least 70 km to the north and has reached to Rupsha river beside Khulna city. People from nearby villages who had been dependently using the water of Shela river since long for domestic perpouses, already have started suffering from lack of fresh water. Their domestic fowls and ducks are also in short of fresh water. It is reported that at least 5 ducks have died till afternoon today at Joimoni village beside Shela river. This will cause a ling term effect not only on the total biodiversity but also for the people living nearby to the river branches of the Sundarbans. It will cause us wealth, money and life. Lets raise the voice now, `stop transportation through Shela river, through Sundarbans. Let The forest be quite and safe. Especial thanks for Sardar Injamamul Haque, a young reporter from Bagerhat for some of these snapshots used here.
