The long bus trip to the Hearnes Center in Columbia comes on the heels of a strong start to MAC competition in Buffalo. Watch Live Friday’s dual meet with Missouri can be seen live on ESPN3 at no additional cost to fans who receive ESPN as part of their TV subscription through participating TV providers. ESPN3 is also available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel on computers connected to on-campus educational networks and on-base military networks. Dual Success Since Head Coach Jim Andrassys third season (2005-06), the Golden Flashes have gone 122-53-1 in dual meets and 38-11-1 in MAC dual meets. Quick Shots · Kent State is No. 20 according to InterMat’s Tournament Rankings and tied for 23rd in Wrestling Insider NewsMagazine’s Tournament Power Index. The Flashes are No. 21 according to Wrestling Report. · A number of Golden Flashes competed unattached at the Cleveland State Open Saturday, led by tournament titles from Mike DePalma and Cole Baxter. Stephen Suglio finished fourth. · Suglio was named MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Dec. 1. · Mack McGuire has won his last six matches and was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 26. · Four Flashes are currently ranked in the top 16 spots according to Amateur Wrestling News. · Senior Tyler Small has won three open tournaments this season (Eastern Michigan, Mercyhurst, Ashland). Small’s 115 career victories rank seventh among Kent State’s all-time leaders. Junior Ian Miller (157) recorded his 31st career pin at Buffalo. Miller is in fourth place among Kent States career pin leaders. The Opponents Missouri (9-0) is No. 5 in this week’s NWCA Coaches poll following a 20-19 tiebreaker victory at Ohio State this past weekend. Other notable victories include Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Purdue and Ohio. The Tigers closed out last season by the winning the conference tournament, followed by an NCAA championship from J’Den Cox at 197 pounds. Cox is one of three Tigers currently ranked in one of the top four spots at their respective weights. SIU Edwardsville (3-7) has a win over a MAC opponent this season with a 20-18 victory over Northern Illinois. In the Cougars’ only tournament of the year, Jake Residori placed fourth in the 174-pound bracket of the Joe Parisi Open, while Chris Johnson finished fifth at heavyweight. In its most recent dual, SIUE won 9-of-10 matches in a 48-3 victory over Manchester Saturday. South Dakota State (2-3) has convincing wins over Drexel (31-6) and Augustana (30-3). The Jackrabbits have four wrestlers ranked in Wrestling Report’s Top 25 led by No. 11 Cody Pack at 157. Redshirt freshman 197-pounder Nate Rotert and junior heavyweight J.J. Everhard each won titles at the Bison Open. Junior 133-pounder Brance Sims was runner-up at both the Bison Open and Daktronics Open. History vs. Opponents Kent State is 1-6 all-time against Missouri with its only victory coming in the finals of 2012 Virginia Duals. Last season, the Tigers topped the Flashes 24-9 in Kent. Mack McGuire, Ian Miller and Caleb Marsh each earned wins for the Flashes. SIU Edwardsville holds a 1-0-1 advantage over Kent State, but the teams have not met since 1984. Friday will be a first time program meeting with South Dakota State. Last Time Out Three starters returned from injuries as Kent State opened MAC duals with a 30-10 road victory over Buffalo on Dec. 6. Mike DePalma, Ian Miller and Cole Baxter all recorded pins as the Flashes took 7-of-10 matches.
