From Anne Dempsey: Somatic movement/yoga is beneficial for releasing muscles and preventing injuries. This is especially important for people who train at a high level. Most of us have rounded shoulders (think computers) and it is important to learn to release and soften contracted muscles and bring us back into proper alignment. Think ear over shoulder. Somatic movement in the style of Thomas Hanna is all about releasing muscles that have actually forgotten how to release. This is called sensory motor amnesia. It is pointless to try stretching a chronically contracted muscle. Instead we bring the muscle further into contraction and then teach it how to release.
