From Communities in Schools: Greetings- We are writing to ask for your support for a new initiative in the Richmond area that we think will add to the quality of the lives of children in need. Too many children living in Richmond do not have basic comforts in their homes. Some children sleep on cold floors. Some have no quiet place in their homes to relax or call their own. As a result children are struggling academically and socially. They aren’t getting the rest they need in order to perform well at school. A good nights sleep has a major effect on a childs ability to come to school prepared to learn; falling behind due to a lack of sleep can have negative long term consequences on a students education, social development, and future. There is a need in Richmond and we can help meet this need. Bed in a Bag initiative is about giving children a soft place to sleep at night. Children are given a cozy sleeping bag to call their own. They are given a small pillow to lay their head on after a long day and a fleece blanket for warmth. Children are also given toiletries to keep them clean and healthy. They receive a towel, wash cloth, hand towel, body wash, hand soap, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste. These may seem like basics to us but currently many children in the Richmond area do not have them available. Helping get these resources to children is one way we can help students who aren’t always able to reach their full potential. Funds are needed for a duffel bag, sleeping bag, blanket, pillow, towel, and basic toiletries—a portable bed their own. The cost to assemble a bed is approximately $50.00.
