From Elliot Chodoff. Excellent. It goes without saying, but it must be said: the murder of Muhammad Abu Khdeir was a horrific, heinous crime. Period. Six Jewish Israelis have been detained, and news reports claim that one has confessed and implicated the others. If the reports are true, Israel needs to act strongly against the killers, making clear that we, as a society, do not tolerate murder, regardless of the identities of murderers and victims. The murder is qualitatively no different than the murders of Naftali, Gil-Ad, and Eyal, and the perpetrators need to be tried, convicted, and sentenced to long prison terms. The message must be unequivocal - you do not deserve to share freedom in our state with the rest of us. The perpetrators have inflicted untold damage to Israel. They have given the haters yet another outlet to spew their anti-Israel and antisemitic diatribes. They have given Arab radicals an excuse to ignite their populations to riot. They have made the term Jewish nationalists associated with murder. They should be condemned and punished for these and other reasons, but PRIMARILY because their actions violate the most fundamental principles of Jewish/Israeli ethics: we do not take revenge on innocent people. We do not kill indiscriminately. In all the pain of the aftermath of the murders of three innocent teens by Hamas terrorists, we must never forget who we are, and never descend to behaving to them as they would behave to us. Eliminating terrorists? Absolutely! Becoming terrorists? Never! Because if we become terrorists, why bother to fight them? Lets just join them, and be done with it. No, thank you.
