The CCMI - Central Caribbean Marine Institute is accepting applications for its research experience for undergraduates (REU) program, which will take place during Summer 2015 in Little Cayman. The REU experience with CCMI can contribute to personal and career development. Each student has set up their own research project, supported by some of the best scientists in this research area. Mentors specialize in a broad range of disciplines including geology, oceanography, marine biology, chemical engineering, and ecological modeling, ensuring a range of project topics are available for study. During the Coral Reef Biodiversity and Resilience REU, the research training afforded to the participants will include: (a) mentorship, (b) direct exposure to practical research, and (c) development of skills to communicate research results to a broad audience. SCCF is looking for detail-oriented individuals who will assist on two Florida Department of Environmental Protection funded restoration projects. The intern will gain direct experience working with lab staff to restore of oyster reef habitat and submerged aquatic vegetation in the Caloosahatchee Estuary. Preference will be given to applicants considering the fields of environmental or aquatic/marine sciences as a career. Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong undergraduate background in the aquatic and/or marine sciences, including additional coursework in biological, physical, chemical, or related sciences. The successful applicant will be expected to assist with all aspects of the restoration projects including volunteer events and monitoring. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking a fisheries and wildlife biologist to work in Ocala, Fla. This position is part of a regional team with FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. The selected candidate will assist with the management of freshwater fisheries resources in Florida’s Northeast Region (12 counties), implement agency established protocols to assess sportfish populations, and assist with stakeholder interactions and report writing. The person selected for this position will be required to regularly interact with individuals from within and outside the agency and the general public. Qualifications: A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a life or physical science and two years of professional experience in a field or laboratory program; OR A masters degree from an accredited college or university in a life or physical science. Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is seeking an environmental intern to work in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. The environmental intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in natural resource management at the first designated aquatic preserve in the state of Florida. Working on the 11,000 acres of submerged lands that make up the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve, the intern will assist environmental specialists in conducting a variety of resource monitoring programs including wading and diving bird nest counts, seagrass surveys, water quality monitoring programs and oyster mapping and abundance. Almost all field work is done by boat; candidates with boating experience will be given preference but previous boating experience is not required. Qualifications: -Have a Bachelor’s degree or be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in the natural sciences or a related field -A desire to learn to about resource management and work in aquatic environments -Be comfortable handling/working with a variety of wildlife -Possess strong communications skills and work well with others -Be familiar with Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint -Have a valid driver’s license -Have a Florida safe boating card or be able to pass FWC Florida Boating Safety Course within 1 month of hire -Be able to obtain DEP snorkel certification within 1 month of hire. The Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center is seeking 2015 Summer camp counselors to work in Mansfield, Georgia. Primary responsibilities include leading outdoor programs and activities for day and residential camps. Programs focus on wildlife conservation, outdoor sporting and Georgia natural history. Qualifications: Applicants must be enthusiastic, responsible, and willing to go the extra mile to provide a great camp experience for every child. Preference will be given to those candidates with previous camp counseling experience and/or those working toward a wildlife or education-related degree. This 11-week position begins on May 18, 2015.
