From Four Fathers, Vol. ii “Huckleberry Friend,” I posted this earlier but summers here and the time is right for dancing in the streets... The summer of 1967 was going to be a good one. The freedom flag of youth was flying everywhere. Sam now drove his dad’s Thunderbird all the time. When Phil was in town, Sam could even drop him off at work and pick him up at the end of the day. Fred had his 1959 Chevy Impala but also had access to his mom’s station wagon to go to the drive-In movies. Fred really wanted to buy a brand new Chevy Camaro convertible- blue with two four barreled carburetors. For just that purpose he was quickly saving all that double and triple overtime pay that he earned from making post office special deliveries on Sundays and holidays. Joe was still waiting for his 16th birthday, a long way away in October. That summer Fred, Sam, and Joe, went running the backstreets trying to find Thunder Road, the world around them was always an inviting, expanding swaddle. They needed only to lower the car windows to imbibe the world’s kinesthesia of abandon, to hear the wind and the tires on the road all play on pennywhistles of secular rapture. There was no doubt you could hear Pan and his flock flutter notes of frolic if you leaned your head out far enough and let your imagination be your guide. Nothing surpassed flying down the open road, smoking cigarettes, the radio on, unfettered rapping about the unknown and the unknowable.
