From Galina Kopytovas book, Jascha Heifetz: Early Years in Russia, translated and edited by Dario Sarlo and Alexandra Sarlo, Indiana University Press 2014, devastating confirmation of what I already suspected: the author says of the absence of documents pertaining to Leopold Auers career in the archives of the conservatory, There was a reason for the absence of documents: the files of professors still in Russia after the 1917 revolutions were kept, but those belonging to Auer and others who departed, such as Nikolai Malko and Vladimir Drozdov, were discarded. (Page 102). In researching both Anatoly and Vladmir last year, I discovered hundreds of library catalog entries for Anatoly in St. Petersburg, and absolutely nothing about Vladimir. All trace of him had been expunged. On a brighter note, I also discovered from this Jascha Heifetz biography that Emanuel Bay had also been Vladimirs pupil. I knew Pauline Heifetz had been, but Bay was a delightful surprise. And, it turns out, another Heifetz sister, Elza, was his student, too.
