Uses of the species The wood is soft, light, with thick texture, grand right to irregular, reddish cream heartwood and light cream sapwood. It presents easy processing and receives good finishing, but it has low natural durability, being susceptible to the attack of fungus, termites and xylophages insects. It is used in the manufacture of matches, shoe hills, toys, scale models, light packages, canoes, lining, core of panels and doors, forms of concrete, laminates, hardboard, cellulose and paper. The tree is indicated for commercial seeding, agro-forest systems and reforestation of degraded areas, due to its fast growth and good performance both in homogeneous formations and mixed with other species. Because of its shape and its beautiful flowers, it can be used in the arborization of squares and large gardens. The rind can be used for tannery and the leaves are used as febrifuge for some Indian populations. Botanical description The tree can reach from 15 to 40m high and 50 to 100cm of DAP. It has cresting ramification, with wide and umbelar canopy. The cylindrical and straight trunk can present buttress. The bark, when young, is greenish and thin, later becoming grayish, thicker, creased and with vertical strips of lenticels; The leaf measures up to 2m of length and has an alternating disposition; it is composed and presents two edges; the folios are opposing and they close when they are disturbed; the rachis is xylem. The plant is hermaphrodite. The terminal panicles measure up to 30cm of length and they have small flowers; the calyx has cream-greenish color; the petals are glabrous, with oblong format and yellow coloration. The fruit is dehiscent, ob-oval-oblong, flattened, coriaceous or sub-xylem legume, glabrous, with beige to brown coloration when mature, 10-16cm of length, 4- 6cm of width and it has a seed covered by the winged meso- endocarp. The seed is elliptical-oval, laterally flattened, acute apex, rounded base, measuring 2cm of length and 1.3cm of width; the tegument is smooth, hard and shiny, it has chestnut coloration with fine strips; hylo is punctiform; rafe is linear; endosperm is abundant. Seedling presents hypocotyl cylindrical, green-clearly and semibrilliant; the foliaceous cotyledons are opposing, with rounded off apex, sagital base and two stipules; epicotyl is cylindrical, green and shining; the first pair of leaves opposing and is paripinnate, with 10-12 pairs of opposing, green, membranaceous, oblong leaflets, apiculus apex and rounded base, original edge and in both the faces; and covered for simple and hyaline trichomes. Ecology Occurs in Brazilian, Venezuelan, Columbian, Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon. In Brazil, it is found in the states of Amazon, Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia, in argillaceous ground of primary and secondary forests, in firm land and in high fertile valley. It occurs in altitudes up to 800m. Budding and fruition The beginning of the reproductive events occurs between 8 and 10 years, in open areas and seeding, and with 12 years, in the forest. In Pará, the budding occurs between June and July.
