From How to be a Successful Tyrant, by Larken Rose The Ideal Subject – The perfect tyranny is not full of impoverished, nearly starving people. What is the point of being able to control people who have nothing, produce nothing, and accomplish nothing? A peasant with a patch of mud, an empty belly and a pitchfork is NOT the ideal subject, No, the ideal subject is not in a constant state of suffering. The ideal subject has his material needs met, is comfortable, relatively content, easily distracted, easily entertained, complacent, obedient, predictable, and above all else, intellectually lazy. To have a regime worth having, you want the people to be productive and happy enough that they refrain from overthrowing you. They are short-sighted and materialistic, and forever trying to purchase happiness. The ideal peasant works a 40-hour week, and (after you take your cut of his paycheck) takes home enough so he can make the minimum payments on all the debts he has (mortgage, car loan, credit cards, etc.). As a result, he is perpetually working and yet forever in debt to YOUR financial institutions. The ideal subject seeks conformity, not greatness. He craves predictability and fears change. When not at the grindstone, he is entertained by pointless drivel, full of emotionalism, inane humor, and flashy “eye candy”, but devoid of anything that might trigger original thought or (heaven forbid) philosophical ponderings. He has a ten-second attention span. His top priority is seeking immediate gratification of his superficial desires. He yearns for nothing deeper. Life as an unthinking cog in your machine is all he knows, all he can imagine, and all he wants.
