From Larry Brickner-Wood at the Waysmeet Center in Durham Just saw this powerful note from PS It Matters, about the draconian cuts to the SNAP (Food Stamps) program. The Recovery For The Hungry Has Begun! Today is a BIG day if you and your family are just surviving on Food Stamps as you work one or two minimum wage jobs. It is “BIG” because today 47 million Americans..22 million that are children…are being notified today that hey will have 5% less if food stamp benefits. The USDA estimates that this cut will result in 21 fewer meals per month for each program participant. Viewed differently, this means that the average participant will have $1.40 to spend on each meal. Just try that for a day and see how you do. Seriously! What has happened that indicates this 5% was not needed? This is how we handle our fiscal issues in this country…take food from 22 million children who are food insecure. Say what you want about the 4% of fraud and abuse in the Food Stamp Program, but explain 28 Million Americans WORKING AMERICANS on the program…working multiple jobs to survive… why they have done so well to deserve this 5% cut. If that was not enough good news, we can now look forward to 10%+ cuts proposed in the Farm Bill. We as a county need to get real that people being hungry is not acceptable if they are doing all they can to work and be productive. We need to stop focusing on the single digit percentage minority that abuse the Food Stamp Program, and FOCUS…really FOCUS on offering assistance to those in need. Stop looking to other lands and look at your neighbors in need. Cut 5% anywhere else, but do not take food from our children and their working parents.
