From Les Boules de Hong Kong by David William Hill, CQR #19: I gave the taxi driver a printout of the address, and after studying the characters through his reading glasses for several seconds, he raised his hand silently to indicate that he understood. Moments later, I received a text from Bon that Chew Ling wasn’t feeling well. He was sorry but was sure I would understand. I tapped out a lengthy response on my outdated, not very smart phone, explaining that I was already on my way to meet them but it was no problem and I looked forward to seeing them soon. Then I deleted what I’d written and fired off a quick “no worries” before I could change my mind again... David William Hill was a recent writer in residence at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. His fiction has appeared previously in [PANK], Hobart, Cimarron Review, J Journal, How We See It: Hong Kong Stories, Halfway Home III, and Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, among others, and was included in Heliography, the inaugural exhibition of Invisible City Audio Tours, in Oakland, CA. He was also an assistant editor for an oral history book from Voice of Witness, titled Underground America: Narratives of Undocumented Lives (McSweeneys, 2008). He has been nominated for a Micro Award, was a finalist for a Wilner Award in fiction, and received a Robert Browning Society Award for dramatic monologue. He has taught writing at several universities in the San Francisco Bay Area and at City University of Hong Kong. A native of Northern California, where he worked as a special education teacher and completed an MFA at San Francisco State University, he currently lives in Hong Kong.asiancha/content/view/688/254/
