It was one of the last Centerville urban legends that did not find its origin in the mine fire: the alley walk. “If you walk the nine allies of Centerville one week before Halloween,” the elders would say, “you’ll see a ghost in Oddfellows’ Cemetery.” Post nineteen-sixties versions of the legend included a variant; the ghost could be identified as Ann Marie Burke. The nineteen-seventies witnessed a decline in the practice, but the previous year’s events and rumors and the rumors of the long dead Ann Marie Burke returning home to Centerville reignited interest in the custom.
