From Oxford: There are 38 colleges in Oxford University and most - TopicsExpress

From Oxford: There are 38 colleges in Oxford University and most of them were started in 11th and 13th century. I have been trying to learn as much as possible about these colleges and its background by visiting the libraries and having discussions with the management and admin staff here. One of the facts that surprised me and made me feel guilty at the same time was - most of these premier colleges and universities in the world are run and managed by the funds coming from the biggest and greatest philanthropists. Why surprise and guilty? Never thought and never had the faintest idea about the source and strength behind such big premier institutions. Guilty because majority of these donors are their Alumni and me/we never ever thought in this angle to support our schools or colleges back home. The first batch from our college graduated in 1983 and i graduated in 1989. During these 30 years, approximately 10,000 students graduated as Engineers and we never looked back and never gave a thought or stimulated the moral social responsibility towards our college. In 1978/79, the founders of IIT did a great job and had a great vision and established the college on over 100 acres of the land. They performed their duties more than their capacity, it was a further responsibility of the students to take this college to a upper level.. but we always kept complaining or blaming the management. No need to go across the continent to Oxford for the example or for inspiration, the example of Minority Instituitions and Universities of Hyderabad are sufficient such as Anwarul Uloom College, Mumtaz College, MJ College of Engg, Deccan Medical and Engg College etc. All these are Non profit instituitions and they are all growing year on year and managed very professionally with lots of good intentions and vision. However, during our visit to college in February this year, when the College Management/Principal explained us the problems due to scarcity of funds, it sounded strange to many of my peers. But today, i could understand it better and their highlighting about the problems in front of the Alumnus is logical. The strength and source of most of the big/premier colleges in the world is the support from their Alumni. We all should try and support the college in whatever way we can to keep it alive and to develop it further. The college is badly in need of upgradation of Labs, Hostel, Library, etc. I request Hafiz sir to pass this message to the Principal/Management and start working on each requirement in an organized manner. Step 1: Lets work out on the upgradation of Labs. The college admin come out with the list of requirements and the quotations. Send the details of requirements and the required budget to the Alumni. And some of us will come forward to fund it and get it done. Step 2: Library: I am sure everyone of us are storing our Engg Books in our home shelves covered by dust and we never opened those books in decades. We all should send these books to the Library and store there which will be used by the current students. Plus donate new books, computers, furniture etc. Step 3: Computerization. Donating Computers, Laptops and Ipads to the college and students. More suggestions and recommendations are welcome from the College and Alumni. All the Donors and Sympathizers are advised to contact the college directly through Hafiz Sir or through any other channel whichever is easier for them.
