From Panay News: ILOILO NAMES SCHOLARS FOR 2014-2015 Date posted: May 23, 2014 ILOILO – The provincial government is giving scholarships to 35 poor yet deserving high school graduates this new school year. This new wave of scholars will pursue degrees mostly in education, arts and sciences, engineering, accountancy, nursing, and information and technology, according to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. “Our scholars are coming from the poorest of the poor families. I hope they can finish their degrees,” said Defensor. Defensor also stressed that politics has nothing to do with the program since the scholars are screened by an independent body composed of select professors from the University of the Philippines Visayas. A total of 1,236 high school graduates applied for the scholarship program this year but only 35 or seven from every district made it. To maintain the scholarship, the scholars must have no failing grades and dropped subjects. They also must maintain a weighted average grade of 2.5 in all of their subjects. Iskolar Sang Iloilo Program (ISIP) offers a P2,000 monthly stipend for housing, food and fare and P1,000 yearly for clothing allowance. The scholars can also get P1,000 allowance per semester for the books and other related projects. Book allowance, according to the governor, is released every June and November upon submission of the registration form. The clothing allowance, on the other hand, is released every June.
