From Pastor Chrissy: Here is some information about parables that might be helpful to be thinking about as you listen to this weeks sermon based on Matthew 13:31-35, 44-52. I found this information in Fred Craddocks commentary on Luke (part of the Interpretation series from Westminster John Knox Press). The word Parable comes from a Greek word that means that which is tossed alongside. It implies that there will be a comparison made, or analogy drawn, or maybe some kind of elaboration or illustration. Craddock finds C.H. Dodds definition of parable to be helpful: At its simplest, the parable is a metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness, and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt about its precise application to tease it into active thought (Craddock, 108). What Craddock thinks is important about parables is that they are elusive, revealing, and yet concealing, having no single form or function, always drawing something from the listener, asking for an interpretation (Craddock, 109).
