From Pastor Curt: WC 102- Foundations of the Faith Series December 1-February 16 After Hurricane Katrina destroyed almost all of the bridges along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the army corps of engineers began a major project of erecting newer and better bridges that would withstand greater sustained winds and tidal surges. As evidenced from the destructive force of 150 knot winds and a 30 foot tidal surge, the foundational piers needed to be wider in diameter and buried deeper into the sea bed or bay. I would often pass these construction sites and notice the heavy equipment and hear the sounds of pile drivers pushing these massive piers past silt and muck to rest firmly upon a solid foundation. I like to think of that imagery when I consider the Foundations of the Faith series for our Winter 2013 Sunday Seminar offering at Willow Creek. Whether you have been grounded in these theological foundations or have never considered them, they will eventually be an anchor of hope and help when the storms of life rage against your relatively comfortable existence. Being caught off guard is not pleasant. When that happens it feels as if your legs are knocked out from beneath you. As my good friend and fellow elder Jim Ackerman said, “These truths are like safety rails to steady you when troubles come.” While these Foundations of the Faith are essentially basic theology they are designed to be accessible to the layman who has no background in theology. Often the word theology conjures up images of dusty books, stale orthodoxy, and pipe smoking old men whos conversations and writings find no purchase among the average church member. The Foundations of the Faith series is extremely practical and relevant to life.
