From Rahmat Shabazz: Jazz News and Views July 2014 On Saturday, July 26, 2014 The Charles Rahmat Woods band will be performing at a FREE CONCERT AND FASHION SHOW in downtown Silver Spring MD. Produced by NIW Fashions, the outdoor event will take place on Veteran’s Plaza at the Silver Spring Civic Center (Ellsworth and Fenton St). The band will start at 6:30pm and the award winning model show will commence at 7pm, with walkway fashion sounds provided by DJ. See you there! The recent DC Jazz Festival proved to be a concentrated week of music that stretched the boundaries of contemporary Jazz. One important event that many missed was the “Marc Cary Retrospective” that took place on June 26. The joint production (DC Jazz Festival and the East of the River Jazz Festival) took place at the wonderful ARC performing arts venue in South East Washington DC, and highlighted the career of keyboardist and DC native Marc Cary. Marc’s creative genius and broad approach was evident by his conduction of exciting and insightful musical ideas utilizing an 8 piece orchestra that featured Carey on piano and “fender Rhodes”, Brian Settles and AC Laws saxophones, Rashaan Carter bass, Zahir tabla, 2 drummers, and Anwar Cary on electronics. The selection “It’s a New Day” was a refreshing take on Miles Davis stylings of the 80’s…with a distinctive DC feel. Has anyone been to Blues Alley (DC) lately? Two shows of note coming up are guitarist Deon CleanCut on July 21, and vocalist supreme Aisha Kahlil on July 23.
