From Signalman author Harold Gifford: On the evening of Jan - TopicsExpress

From Signalman author Harold Gifford: On the evening of Jan 17,1960 a 1935 model DC-3 passenger airplane took off from the St Louis airport with 23 souls on board bound for Minneapolis. The aircraft had launched into an icy Missouri night sky at eight o’clock and within moments after taking to the air a very serious life threatening emergency had occurred. A total failure of the electrical system on the aged airplane placed the aircrew and all on board in a very perilous situation. With no lights, heat, radios or navigation systems available, flying into a Midwest blizzard seemed to be an insurmountable task. During five hours and forty minutes of extreme cold, dark and fear from not knowing if anyone would live or die, some very serious praying was going on. This bizarre episode ended in an Iowa cornfield at one-forty AM on the 18th of Jan 1960, while a blizzard was raging. Among the 23 passengers were the members of the 1960 Minneapolis Lakers professional basketball team. It has been referred to as The Miracle Landing and, upon reading what happened, you can be the judge. I am available to tell the story at meetings , church suppers or other similar type of venues at no charge as I was in the cockpit of the DC-3 that night.
