From State Representative GA Hardaway Sr. - When we discuss Memphis government without including members of the MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL, we really arent seeking solutions, just venting. Ill remind my fellow Memphians that our councilmen and councilwomen are solely responsible for voting on public policy and appropriations. The Mayor of Memphis executes the legislative decisions of the Memphis City Council. All of these City of Memphis projects and programs which are funded from the city coffers are voted on by the MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL. If you want to spend more city money on youth jobs & services, TELL IT TO YOUR MEMPHIS CITY COUNCILPERSON! If you want to spend more city money on law enforcement, TELL IT TO YOUR MEMPHIS CITY COUNCILPERSON! If you want to spend more city money on housing, TELL IT TO YOUR CITY COUNCILPERSON! If you want the children to get their $57 million for education, TELL IT TO YOUR CITY COUNCILPERSON! The 13 members of the MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL are the ONLY elected officials who vote on the CITY OF MEMPHIS BUDGET! If youre truly concerned and want change, then TELL YOUR MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL HOW YOU WANT YOUR MEMPHIS MONEY SPENT! If they dont listen to you, then govern yourselves accordingly to get their attention! If you say you CANT BREATHE then stop letting legislators aka City Councilpersons enact public policy that suffocates you. If you want to breathe free air accept the responsibilities of freedom and engage government in an informed and ethical manner.
