From Straight To Video **************************************************************** We continue the run down of the songs featured on the new Straight To Video album..... Track 8 - Story Of My Life Originally recorded by Social Distortion Taken from the 1994 film ‘Reality Bites’ Honey, all you have to be by the time youre 23 is yourself. I may be in a minority but I probably relate a little more to Reality Bites than I do yesterdays film Singles. I think its just an age thing. I was maybe just that fraction too young when Singles was released but when youre young a couple of years is a very big difference so by the time this movie came out Id turned 20, so saw a little more of myself I guess in the characters? Ethan Hawke, who Ive always been a fan of since his very first film, Explorers in 1985, plays the role of Troy Dyer. Hes slacker cool, a bit of an asshole at times, but the coolness totally outweighs it. Hes the all knowing smart guy you admired and aspired to be whilst in your late teens and early twenties. I recently revisited this film a year or so ago and still enjoyed it immensely! Check it out if you get chance. Probably the most famous thing about Reality Bites is that the soundtrack spawned Lisa Loebs massive hit single Stay (I Missed You). Theres so much other great stuff on there too though including the one I chose for Straight To Video.... Social Distortions Story Of My Life. Watch this space though as another Reality Bites song may make a STV appearance sometime soon.... just saying! Ive known Jamie Delerict for a long time now. When I first met him back in 2003, or was it very early 2004, I became something of a sponge to everything hed already accomplished in music. His band Panic had played all over the UK many times and released a bunch of albums, but the huge thing for me was that hed played in America - that was number one on my Music Bucket List and he helped me achieve that. It was a big deal for me to go over there, alongside Jamie and the rest of TCC, to play some shows, not just once but twice. Weve also spent a lot of time together out on the road which means hes had his fair share of the control of van journey music. Some I liked, quite a lot I didnt, but one that became a favourite was Social Distortion, so it was so very cool to get Jamie to do the lead vocals on this track. He sang on the first STV EP but its now become kind of a running joke that his backing vocals were so low in the mix you couldnt hear him! It was cool to hear Jamie translate the lyrics of this song. Theres a lot of them and he really made it sound like it was his story which I think is really great. It was also a lot of fun to sing the backing vocals with too and work out the various harmonies. This time round I made sure they were nice and loud! Theres a fair bit of guitar work on this song too even though its pretty much the same chords all the way through. I loved getting Vin from The Spangle Corps (Official) involved in this track. Much like myself, hes always looked up to JD so to have them both on here is awesome. The really cool slide guitar parts you hear were sent over from Canada by Killer Ky Anto who was part of The Intergalactic Rock Stars with Robin Black. Theyre originally from a full solo take but I think in this format they add some cool twists to the song and I like how the slide solo rideout fitted in. The STV version of Story Of My Life also features my very first Guitar Solo. Okay, its no shred fest and I wanted to keep it along the lines of the original so Im pleased with how it turned out. I dont think therell be many more of these though - its scary shit! Too much pressure! **************************************************************** Vocals – Jamie Delerict Guitars – Vincent Watts / Rob Lane Slide Guitar – Ky Anto Backing Vocals – Jamie Delerict / Rob Lane Bass – Rob Lane Drums – Michael Richards ****************************************************************
