From TCGHS: The stories of the victims of the Columbia Disaster - TopicsExpress

From TCGHS: The stories of the victims of the Columbia Disaster who are buried at Pekin’s Lakeside Cemetery will be the topic of the next meeting of the Tazewell County Genealogical & Historical Society. This will be Tuesday, Aug. 13, 7 p.m., at the society’s library, 719 N. 11th St., Pekin. It is open to the public. The program will be a recap of the society’s cemetery walk which was conducted at Lakeside in May. Several members presented facts and family anecdotes about the victims while pointing out their burial sites. These stories will be shared again for those who were unable to attend earlier and for those who were helping in other areas of the cemetery that day. The emphasis will not be on the boat, but about the people who died on it that July night 95 years ago. Over 40 stories will be shared. The watch of Thomas Hancock, which stopped at the time of the wreck and his death, will be demonstrated by his granddaughter that night. It was unavailable during the May event. The popular book The Wreck of the Columbia, published last year and authored by member Ken Zurski, will be available for purchase at the meeting. Ken will again portray Coroner Clary, as he did earlier at the walk. Dr. Clary was in charge of the inquests and investigation into the wreck at the time. Information about the meeting or the society may be obtained at 309-477-3044 or the society’s website at tcghs.org. TCGHS is also on Facebook.
