These three men join the near hundreds of firefighters who lost their lives after engaging in recovery efforts. According to NYC Resources 9/11 Health Statistics, FDNY first responders showed health effects soon after the attacks, with 99% of exposed firefighters reporting a minimum of one new respiratory symptom. The Fire Department of New York has recorded over 850 firefighters and ambulance workers with cancers certified as relating to their work at Ground Zero. The Uniformed Fire Officers Association is a union of thousands of lieutenants, captains, battalion chiefs, deputy chiefs, medical officers and supervising fire marshals in the Fire Department of New York.
