From United Wisconsin -- some disappointing but not surprising news. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 6/21/13 United Wisconsin Statement on Senate Passage of 2013-15 Budget MADISON – United Wisconsin Executive Director Lisa Subeck released the following statement on the passage by the Wisconsin State Senate of the proposed 2013-15 budget bill. “Last night, the Republican majority in the State Senate toed the party line, choosing extreme political ideology and pay-to-play politics over the good of the people of Wisconsin. With the lone exception of Dale Schultz (R-17), GOP Senators voted in favor of a budget loaded with payback to the very same special interest groups that line their campaign coffers. Under the budget passed last night, Wisconsin families struggling to make ends meet will see very little tax relief, while wealthy individuals and corporations reap the benefits of large tax breaks. As our state sits at 44th in the nation in jobs, this budget does nothing to put Wisconsinites back to work but provides big rewards for corporate special interests. In perhaps the most glaring example of pay-to-play politics, private school advocates were rewarded for big campaign spending on Republicans with a statewide expansion of vouchers for unaccountable private schools, a move that puts the future of public education in serious jeopardy. The Senate actually managed to take this already bad plan a step further with newly added limits to public access to information about voucher school performance. This budget further chips away at the safety net for low to moderate income uninsured individuals and families by kicking tens of thousands of Wisconsinites off BadgerCare, leaving them without access to affordable health care. In a move clearly designed to undermine implementation of the federal Affordable Care Act and raise Governor Scott Walker’s profile in the Republican Party nationally, Senate Republicans voted to support Walker’s plan by turning down federal dollars for Medicaid expansion. The extreme ideological budget bill passed last night by the Republican controlled Senate puts politics over people and jeopardizes the future of our state. Though clearly an unlikely outcome given Governor Walker’s extreme right-wing agenda, United Wisconsin calls on the Governor to veto this bill and demand a budget that puts the people of Wisconsin first.” United Wisconsin is an independent grassroots organization of citizens restoring the Wisconsin tradition of democracy in action.
