From WSJs Accelerators blog this week -- gotta agree here, and this is something weve known in the world of news writing for many years: If you measure every hour that your employees take off to run to a child’s medical appointment or attend a school play, you’re sending a message that their personal lives matter very little, and that following an inflexible set of policies matters more. That is the opposite of what you should convey to keep motivation (and retention) high. Allow your employees the freedom to work flexible schedules, and you’ll quickly see who abuses the policy or uses it respectfully. Does it mean that you might have some people working until 3 a.m. and walking in the next day at noon? Yes, and that’s perfectly fine if it means they’re happy and delivering for your company and your customers. This kind of flexibility makes startup life more manageable. blogs.wsj/accelerators/2014/06/19/jack-welde-4-tips-for-leading-through-the-peaks-and-valleys-of-startup-life/ p.s. thx Jack Welde for the guest post.
