I am home from sponsoring the 6th National Summit on Children and Families of the Incarcerated, held in Little Rock, supported by Arkansas Voices, the National Bill of Rights Partnership and the National Resource Center for Children and Families of the Incarcerated of Rutgers University. We had particpants from several states, along with many Arkansans, especially from our state Headstart programs. Our presenters were longtime practitioners and academic experts in our field of children impacted by the criminal justice system. We honored our Bill of Rights partners from Arizona and Connecticut, and we had the truest of experts present from their personal experiences, including the two terrific youths from Project WHAT! in San Francisco, grandparent and custodial parent caregivers. It was a convening intend to inspire and energize, and I think we succeeded, given the verbal responses to the information from nearly everyone in the room. This is our 6th Summit but the last one held was in 2007. We agreed that since the national groups that used to have a track on children of the incarcerated are no longer offering these opportunities, we need to hold a national summit every other year. I hope this will happen in 2015. Dee Ann Newell
