From West Central Ohio Veterinary Emergency Service: This article is misguided and utterly false. Although GDV, aka bloat, is a real fear in large (especially deep chested) breeds, ice cubes are not the cause. Frigid water gastric cramping is a falsehood. This dog was likely overheated, eager to drink water and bloated from drinking too quickly. The real take home point here should be not to allow your pets to become over heated and dont allow them to drink (as well as eat) in excess. The faster they eat or drink, air is brought into the stomach along with it, putting the pet at risk for bloating. As the stomach enlarges, it can rotate causing strangulation of the large blood vessels to the abdomen, a condition called gastric-dilatation volvulus (GDV). GDV is a life threatening condition and requires veterinary attention immediately.
