From a VUC page:Many associate friendships with hugs, people who will make you smile, laugh and feel worthwhile. Friends are those willing to lend a hand and experience ALL of life with us. Is there a cost to friendship? There are two schools of thought ; the first being that the best things in life are free while the other being that there is nothing in this life for free. I chose not to incline myself to any particular side but rather, choose to look at it as the other side of the friendship coin. I realize that just like diamonds, it’s the pressures of life shared that progressively confer value to a friendship. It’s when you chose to touch the leprosy of your friend that the healing begins to flow. So I ask myself…could the true friend please stand up? Many of us carefully sift what to tell our friends due to the fact that majority of these friendships only have a top layer...The top side of the friendship coin…the happy side. It bothers me that there are a lot of tears behind the well placed fashionable mascaras, eye shadows and eye pencils, sometimes their purpose is not to enhance beauty but rather to cover the wrinkles of a broken heart. It bothers me that it’s the inanimate things like pillows and sheets that know more about the hurt and pain we are living in than fellow “loving” human beings. Do you have the courage to trust that your nakedness will be covered by your friend? Can you express your doubt, fear, disappointment and grief in a safe compassionate environment? The environment that I speak of isn’t necessarily the geographical location but rather a state of the heart that resonates care, eyes that see through lenses of love, a mind that is strong and ever hopeful, hands that hold in gentle embrace, words that don’t deny the current reality or truth but chose to speak faith, hope, life and love. Mirror, mirror on the wall…..am I a true friend? Can the people who call me friend say the above of me? Will I dare to let my guard down? Am I courageous enough to enter the arena of my friend’s battle and fight alongside him rather than cheer from the sidelines as he faces the lions of his challenges? Mirror, mirror on the wall...would I be a true friend to me?
