From a concerned momma: Has anyone felt that their child lost - TopicsExpress

From a concerned momma: Has anyone felt that their child lost their ability to swallow due to having an ng tube in? My son had one placed at a week old. He was breast feeding before then but not enough to gain weight. He was swallowing well though. He went through a scary time of intubation (hypotonia and lung collapsed) and was able to still breast feed once extubated. We took him home at 2 months old and was allowed breast feeding 3x a day for five mins for oral therapy but no more than that til we could have a swallow study done to pursue more. My milk dried up and it got harder for him (weak suck) and eventually we stopped. He struggled with bottles and choked and over time did less and less and now cant swallow liquids without choking at all. I feel that they restricted his amount if oral feeding and he never got enough time to establish a good swallow and now hes failed his first swallow study and it will be a long road of therapy. Anyone in similar situations? Suggestions? We are finally looking into a gtube soon. Wish wed done that sooner but wanted to give him time to try before surgery.
