From a military point of view, the U.S. always enjoyed a clear superiority over the Vietnamese. Theoretically, the Americans could have stayed in Vietnam for many more years. But in order to do so they would have needed an army of half a million soldiers. Such an army did not exist. The changing mood of the working class and the soldiers from working class families made it impossible to continue the war. If the government had had prolonged the war, it would have brought the U.S. to the brink of revolution.
