From a wall discussion about ISIS/AQ: Carl Watson I agree with you Nott. I used to train with a former marine who told me a good number of insurgents that he and his company captured in Afghganistan were originally from rural Pakistan. Usually; each troop leader that they captured carried a copy of the Quran. When his own groups translator took a look at some of the pages; there were several parts that had been altered in each case; in some cases entire pages being changed to say such things as Allah commands muslims of the world to raise arms against the United States, India and Israel in particular. When the translator; who was also Muslim began to question all but the groups leader about the inaccuracies of their copy of the Quran by showing them a legitimate version; it seemed that no one understood what was being shown to them. In each case; all but the troops leader were completely illiterate. EVERYTHING that they knew of their holy text was told to them verbally by senior members of whichever cell they were with. Meaning that they truly believed that by performing terrorist acts that they were simply following gods word. That same marine then told me the majority of enemy forces he came into contact with werent crazy and he didnt hate them; he simply saw them as mislead by those taking advantage of them. Is this the case throughout all terrorist organizations? More than likely not, but it always amazed me how violent Islamic militants who claim to live by the Quran would think nothing of editing the word of god to fit their own purposes. Pretty sneaky way to get new recruits in my opinion.
