From all the reviews Ive been seeing it appears I may be in the minority, but I wholeheartedly believe Netflixs Marco Polo is better than HBOs Game of Thrones. Marco Polo takes the viewer into a less fantastical journey through Kublai Khans Chinese empire. HBO does a superb job weaving a web from the threads of George R.R. Martins novels. The show is a perfect amalgamation of political wheeling and dealing, espionage and hidden motives, the brutality of medieval battle, lust, and gorgeous cinematography. However from what Ive seen in the first 4 episodes of Marco Polo, Netflix has essentially taken Game of Thrones and removed the over-the-top magic/sorcery (more-or-less replaced with kung fu), rampant murder of integral characters, and added a dash more humanity. Marco Polo starts with a tale of heartache and betrayal and expounds upon it. Theyve perfectly set the stage to cash-in on a market waiting with bated breath for April 2015.
