From early childhood we learn how to look after our self-interest, even if it is at the expense of others. This mentality justifies harming other human beings either on a reciprocal basis or as a preemptive gesture in self-interest. It gets reflected in our common everyday phrases such as ‘payback time’, ‘tit for tat’, ‘level scores’, ‘get even’, ‘ one bad turn deserves another’, or ‘do unto others before they can do unto you’. This mentality grows roots in all of us - until we wake up.
