From everydayhealth Q: My husband, who is 68 years old, has been diagnosed with dementia. He takes medications to slow the progression, and Seroquel to help with his anger and aggression. The dose has been increased twice in the last year. His anger is becoming dangerous for me to be around him. He threatens me, throws things at me, and wants to destroy anything that is mine. I am frightened and dont know what to do. His physician knows the problems, but does not seem concerned. What do you suggest please? I need some guidance before it is too late. – Becky, Ohio A: I know how upsetting it must be to have your husband be still young by modern standards but developing dementia. I do think, however, that you should consider a second opinion. You mentioned that he is on medications in addition to Seroquel (quetiapine), so you must consider whether they are interacting in a negative way. Moreover, sometimes other conditions can cause the anger and aggression that you report. I am sure that your physician is trying to reassure you by his nonchalance but you are quite correct you do need guidance about his condition. You feel insecure and are in possible danger. Fortunately, not all patients with dementia develop such hostility, but when they do it is important to utilize tranquilizers. Talk to your doctor about the possibility of adding a tranquilizer to help calm him. I understand, of course, that not everyone can afford in-home assistance by professional caregivers or nurses. But if you are able to afford such help you might want to consider trying to find a male caregiver to assist you. Another prospect is that your husband may need to be in a nursing home. Unfortunately, however, many nursing homes are reluctant to take patients with your husbands behavioral issues. Sometimes other family members such as children, if you have them, can help as well so do seek assistance from your social network. Learn more in the Everyday Health Alzheimers Disease Center.
