From my Facebook page (facebook/PlanesTrainsShips) Early 70s, DC-3 N230D (c/n 4986) at Barnstable Municipal Airport, Hyannis, MA Both photos by my dad. Photo 1. 7/30/72. Note that the port cowling is off. Photo 2. 4/21/73. Profile view of starboard side of N230D. The DC-3 facing the camera in the background is Air New Englands N25666 with both of her cowlings removed. N230D was originally to be delivered to TWA, but on 10/22/42 was delivered directly to the USAAF as C-49K 43-1999. She had a typical succession of post war owners. While being operated on a training flight by Roblex Aviation near San Juan, Puerto Rico on 4/4/01, she was damaged beyond repair as a result of a forced water landing. The starboard engine failed, the port engine was feathered by mistake and down she went. There were no fatalities. An account of the the accident can be found here: tinyurl/cn4986Loss
