From my book His funeral was early in the morning--it was still dark out and was just for family and very close friends at our lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach, and then the burial with a view of the Pacific ocean. At the time, there was no headstone or anything. He finally got one ten years after he died- my oldest brother, Michael, had been concerned about people vandalizing the grave because something like that happened to Charlie Chaplins grave about all year earlier. At this writing, Ethan Wayne said the family was mulling over changing the existing marker on Waynes grave, which features a quote about greeting tomorrow with open arms that John Wayne once offered up to a magazine interview. Ethan says the family has been discussing changing his fathers tombstone inscription to read simply, feo, furete y formal--a Spanish phrase that translates as ugly, strong, and dignified.Ethan says his father had requested the quote at one point and frequently said he felt the phrase described him. That is probably more appropriate,Ethan says in looking back at his fathers enormous impact on his life, not to mention millions of others. Its simpler, and it fits the kind of person he was.
