From my new book in the Jason the Juggernaut series: The Unstoppable Light, Living Legends. Deciding immediate action necessary, Jason flung himself forward and down off the rock without looking behind. He planned to hit the bottom running and leap to the right to get offline of any predatory creature pouncing after him. Hitting the bottom hard after a twelve foot drop, he leaped clumsily to the side. A good thing he did, for a large creature landed right where he had been with a loud, thunderous roar. Through peripheral vision he got the impression of a large, dark brown, furry creature the size of a grizzly bear. But the way it landed was odd for a bear, back feet first. He didnt take time to get a better look, scooting around the rock as fast as his feet could take him. Only then did he notice he somehow managed to retain his hold on his gun and the open pocket knife. Supposing the creature would be following closely behind, he continued around the next corner of the rock. Trying to gauge how close he was being followed, he glanced back as he rounded the corner. Not watching where he was going, he felt his foot hit a rock, causing him to stumble and he fell, landing hard trying to protect his gun and keep from cutting himself on the knife. He felt the jarring pain of impact as his shoulder crushed on the rocks and a broken stick, wedged in the crack of another rock, simultaneously jammed into his ribs. He lay there for a moment stunned by the pain. Knowing that danger may soon be following, he forced himself to move as soon as he could. He rolled off the rocks and forced himself to one knee, pistol pointing to the corner of the large boulder and waited. As he waited he took inventory of himself. The pain in his side made it so he could hardly breathe, indicating some broken ribs. His shoulder hurt and blood ran from a cut in it, but it would be okay. Grateful to be alive, he gave a short prayer of thanks. After a few minutes he heard a branch crack some distance away. He slowly stood and listened. Further away he heard a strange, deep-throated cry, then nothing. Trembling uncontrollably and breathing painful, shallow breaths, he cautiously returned to the fire and threw on some more sticks. He felt certain that creature was not a bear. He searched for tracks and found deep imprints of what looked like a bears hind feet coming off the boulder, but it lacked the claws. Could it have been the legendary Yeti or Big Foot? Or perhaps it was some other creature native to this country?
