From one of the visitors at our Bald Eagle Days this weekend: I learned some hunters (unintentionally and in an effort to be responsible) may actually contribute to the poisoning of eagles, especially bald eagles. Hunters who use lead shot or lead bullets and leave deer innards behind contribute to lead poisoning because the innards leach lead through the remains. Eagles eat the remains. Lead is a neurotoxin and even small quantities will kill them. While lead bullets have gone out of production, many hunters may still be using ammunition containing lead. Solution? Use copper bullets or take the deer innards with you.
