From our friends at BPD: Today, December 2, 2014, the Burlington Police Department began receiving multiple reports of suspicious phone calls. In each call, the caller identified himself/herself as an employee of the Burlington Police Department and indicated that the subject who received the call needed to pay a fine or face arrest. In each case, the caller had personal information of the person they called. The victims reported that the caller spoke with a heavy foreign accent. The Burlington Police Department business line, (802)658-2704, was “spoofed” and came up on the receiver’s caller ID. The Burlington Police Department would like to remind the public to be aware of such scams and that at no time would a police officer or other representative of the police ever ask for payment information such as credit card, bank account, etc., over the phone. If you have been a victim of this scam or if you have any further information, you can contact Officer Lee Thayer at the Burlington Police Department at (802)540-2261.
