From our mission partners in Nicaragua, Hannah and Brandon Weidman: POSTED ON JANUARY 14, 2015 BY HANNAH IN NICARAGUA Not flesh of my flesh When I was young the desire to adopt was planted in my heart. I often wonder what triggered this idea, was it my childhood friend who was adopted from Korea, or the number of exchange students I interacted with at school, or watching the movie “Annie”? I suppose it’s not as important to know when, how, or why my heart is open to it, just that it is. The same could not be said for Brandon. When we were just dating we had the “kids” talk and I dropped the “A” word…. ADOPT. I’m so glad I was able to capture his response…. Unknown I suppose it wasn’t quite that bad, but there were certainly concerns on his part, but I wasn’t convinced, and I don’t think God was either. When we first came down to Nicaragua in 2010 we went with the prayer on our hearts, “Lord, invite us into something bigger than ourselves. Show us a greater passion.” We quickly were soaking in the vibrant culture, vast poverty, and warm people and liked what Nicaragua was bringing out of us, a desire to serve, simplify, and sacrifice. The entire week, there never seemed to be a shortage of kids to play with, sit with, and do charades with. They simply enjoyed being. They weren’t absorbed in video games or cellphones, they made themselves available and vulnerable enough to be loved on. When we returned back to the States, we were sitting by the fire pit in our backyard, recapturing memories and sharing what we missed most, when these words from Brandon pierced my heart (in a good way), “I now understand how I could love another person’s child as much as my own.” Thank you Lord. When we moved to Nicaragua in September of 2012, we decided to put starting a family on hold, whether biological or adopted, at least until we had a better idea of what living abroad was going to be like. When we realized it wasn’t all that scary here, and we actually liked the idea of raising a family in this environment, the conversations of starting a family resumed. What we don’t know is which will come first! We officially began the adoption process in Nicaragua in the spring of 2014. We are excited and grateful to say that we were approved in November and are now in the waiting period. We have asked for siblings between the ages of 3-7, but have agreed to be open to whoever the agency pairs us with. Our lives are a phone call away from being completely and radically changed! Once the government agency has made a “match” within 24-48 hours we will drive to the orphanage to meet our child. They will tell the child that they will be meeting their new parents and more than likely they will come home with us that very same day. If that seems crazy, tell us about it! This day will mark the beginning of the fostering period which could last 4-8 months and then the process is legalized. Since we are Nicaraguan residents, the process is much faster than international or US-based adoptions. It also makes it very affordable, but we are still in need of assistance. Being support-funded and living on a fixed budget requires that we always put our financial needs before God and trust His provision. This is a humble position we must take it the adoption process, especially in regards to the legal fees and added costs to our budget. We are asking for $5,000 to cover these costs and have opened a Fundly account to raise those funds. To support us on a one time give, please visit our page at: fundly/the-weidman-s-nicaragua-adoption In addition, our living expenses will increase and so will our need of monthly support. Our goal is to raise $250 a month. Monthly contributions can be made through our ITeams giving site at :https://wwws.iteams.org/us/?give_to=Brandon%20and%20Hannah%20Weidman We look forward to the day when we can can share names and pictures of our future Weidmans. Right now those are the precious details that God holds in His heart. Hannah About Hannah I was born and raised in the Bible belt, specifically in Indiana. I became a Christian when I was 12 and had the dream of being a missionary one day, or at least marrying one.... 12 years later, I married a missionary in the making, we just didnt know it. Weve been married since May of 2009. In September 2012 after selling everything we owned, we took a big leap and moved to Nicaragua. This blog picks up where our lives started getting interesting!
