From the 17 Newsroom: 9 p.m. Shirley Fire Update: A community meeting will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. at Faith Community Church, 20 West Panorama Dr. in Wofford Heights. This meeting will be hosted by the Sequoia National Forest and the Kern County Fire Department. Representatives from both agencies and Incident Commander Jeanne Pincha-Tulley will speak at the meeting. Current Situation: Active fire behavior was observed today as the fire was pushed by the wind and ran with rapid rates of spread. Topography also influenced the fire as several uphill runs were observed. One thousand homes are threatened throughout the fire area. Firefighters fought from the ground and from the air to protect them today as the fire moved closer the threatened communities. The fire is also threatening Southern California Edison power lines, communications facilities, and forest timber. Aircraft with pilots trained to fly at night were used effectively on the incident last night and are expected to be deployed again tonight. Evacuations: Pala Ranch, Juniper Highlands, Old State Road, all residences between Old State Rd and Evans Rd on Hwy 155. An evacuation advisory is issued for Alta Sierra. Red Cross Evacuation Center Location: 6405 Lake Isabella Dr. in Lake Isabella. Last night the center housed 33 evacuees. The Red Cross shelter is also able to accept small animals as long as they are accompanied by a human at all times. Anyone with a large animal evacuation need is encouraged to contact Brian Shaw at (760) 223-6736 Open: The majority of the world class recreational opportunities in the Kern River Ranger District and vicinity are unaffected by the fire activity and remain open. Motorists are encouraged to exercise extreme caution when driving in the area due to fire firefighters and fire equipment Closures: Portions of the following National Forest roads are closed under Order No. 14-11:Rancheria Rd. (Forest Road No. 25S15) Wagy Flat Rd. (Forest Road No. 25S02), Sawmill Road (Forest Road No. 26S03), Alder Creek Road (Forest Road No. 25S04) Highway 155 is closed at the intersection with Wofford Heights Blvd. Residents, owners, lessees of property are exempt from the closure as long as the closure does not fall within an evacuation area.
