From the 1975 publication of “1975 Senior Class Will and Prophecy”` CARR LAKE Where have the years gone since eight scared six-year-olds started school at Carr Lake. Scott Christianson, Jane Dow, Todd Moen, Danny and Mike Olson, Mary Rex, Steve Richer, and Cindy Shephard were those eight scared kids who are now graduating from BHS, plus the five who joined us. In third grade, it was Margaret Batchelder, Jim Shelquist and Dale Claymore (only third grade). Then in fifth grade, it was Janelle Larson, in sixth grade it was Fay Adams, Betty Fulton, and Carol Petrowske. Unfortunately, Janelle Larson and Fay Adams left Bemidji so will not graduate from BHS with our class. One outstanding incident in first grade was when Danny Olson and Mary Rex were locked in the playroom and missed their lunch. When returning from recess we discovered them still playing in the playroom. Danny always did like girls!!! We all had such fun playing on the monkey bars, swinging, and hopscotch, especially in the third grade when Dale Claymore played hopscotch with the girls. We also were so lucky to have a big hill for sliding. Up until we were fourth graders we had to use cardboard to slide down the hill. After that we were big kids and got to use the toboggan. It was really exciting to us to watch our janitor flood the area for our skating rink. Many are the hours of fun that we skated. As fourth graders, a big change took place in our school. Instead of being an Independent School District, we consolidated with District 31. This meant we no longer had seventh and eighth graders at Carr Lake but gained all the advantages offered to us that the city schools participated in. Another thriller for us was about April of the year when the snow melted and ran down the hill making a big puddle at the bottom. We were not allowed to be down there because we would get all wet, but there was a nice group of pine trees that made a lovely playhouse for us girls. Naturally those nasty old boys would raid us and “break up our housekeeping.” Their reason was to get us to join them in either playing kickball or softball and most of the time the girls won. Could the reason that the girls won, be because they outnumbered the boys!!! Like all kids we had games of being first: bathroom to hold the door and make sure everyone washed their hands; to get in the bus line to call that our bus was coming; in from recess to get our milk and sit in our seat; etc. We never lacked for having parties; birthdays and holidays were never forgotten. It definitely was the highlight of the year to be able to take part in the annual Christmas program. Every parent was there, and the upstairs was packed. Of course, we always got a bag of treats and exchanged presents. Also ending each year was the annual picnic. Again, all parents came and spent the day visiting. The kids ran races of all kinds, got prizes, and softball games, were sunburned and tired out by the end of the day. Now as we are older, we can see what a lot of extra work our teachers did to make these such important events to always remember. We would like to say a big “thank you” to our grade school teachers: Mr. William Haaverson, Mrs. Ottena Puff, Mrs. Olga Paulson, and Mrs. Lorena Dale. They guided us both in our studies and in our play, gave unselfishly of their time and talents. To them we owe our gratitude. It is really kind of sad to think of graduating, because we will all say farewell to BHS. Each will be going a different direction, and time changes us all.
