From the Book of 1st Samuel... Moments To Remember Life is filled with unforgettable moments: the first day of school, procuring a first drivers license, a first date, graduation, a new job, marriage, a new house, retirement. But few other moments compare with the ecstasy that surrounds the birth of a child! Hannah was a woman who had been unable to conceive a child. For years she had lived with this galling disappointment, exacerbated by the jeers of the rival wife Peninnah, who flaunted her growing brood. But Hannah never stopped praying (1st Samuel 1), and God finally granted her a son. She named him Samuel, which means heard of God. Since God had granted her request, she relinquished Samuel back to the Lord. Hannahs joy at doing so is recorded in 1st Samuel 2;1: My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. From the time he was a small child Samuel was devoted to Gods service, and later in life he became a great leader. Hannahs story reminds us of another incident that took place generations later... another moment to remember. A young woman named Mary was given an incredible message by an angel: You have found favor with God. You will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus (Luke 1:30-31). Samuels birth was important because he was to play a significant role in Israels history, but Jesus birth was the ultimate miracle- God the Son in human flesh. The angel promised, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end (Luke 1:32-33). Mary responded in the same way Hannah had done so long before: She praised God with all her heart (compare Hannahs prayer in 1st Samuel 2;1-10 with Marys song in Luke 1:46-55): My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me Blessed (Luke 1:46-48). The most important milestone for any of us is the day we ask Jesus into our life. As we get to know him better, there will be many other memorable moments- to relish now and for all eternity. Self Discovery: Picture God telling you directly that he has heard your cries and that you have found favor with him. Does this incredible declaration cause you to desire to live a thankful service? What will you do for Jesus today? May God Bless us. Our next study in the 1st Book of Samuel.... Your Servant Is Listening
