From the Classical FM page: Henryk Gorecki - Symphony of Sorrowful Songs If any piece deserves the label modern classic, its this. Gorecki used the words etched into the walls of a Gestapo prison by an 18 year old girl during the Second World War as his inspiration, and the results are as chilling as they are moving. Gorecki is fairly new to me. The more I listen to his works, the more I am fascinated. This piece is very difficult to sing, as one requires the right colour, especially in the opening bars. There is only 3 notes, but the soprano must keep the lines extremely horizontal without changing the colour. The strings in the orchestra have to always hold back, bowing with as little energy as possible. The result is a very haunting piece. https://youtube/watch?v=miLV0o4AhE4
