From the Connecticut Posts Robert Miller, a thoughtful exploration of the medias response to Newtowns insistence on no coverage of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School: Major national news media -- including ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today -- have all said they will stay away from Newtown on the anniversary. The Poynter Institute, a non-profit journalism center, in St. Petersburg. Fla. said the willingness of some in the media to censor themselves, no matter how well-meaning, was surprising. The town is a news story, said Al Tompkins, senior faculty for broadcasting at Poynter. The anniversary is a news story. Some of the people in town have become part of the story, by doing things like going to Washington, D.C., to speak on gun violence. First Amendment watchdogs, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut, say towns actions create a dangerous precedent. The Constitution does not allow the government to exclude the press from places where the public may go, Andrew Schneider, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut said. The terrible tragedy of Sandy Hook does not make freedom of the press, which is a core value in this country, any less necessary to our democracy. Thank you, Maura Casey, for the link.
