From the Dallas Morning News this morning (link at the bottom of this post): "If the law [the ACA] took full effect as planned, many conservatives feared, it would be nearly impossible to repeal..." Groups affiliated with the Koch Brothers have spent over $200,000,000 [!] to oppose the ACA. I do not believe they spent this money because they believed Obamacare is bad for the country. They are not altruists. These people are in it for their own interests. In their view, if Obamacare succeeds (as they know it will, based on the success of the Massachusetts version), the Democrats are going to be hard to defeat for many years. The conservative Republican bankrollers want the sympathetic treatment Republicans will give billionaires, and a few hundred million spent to try to protect against Democratic success, before the demographics of America turn a lot more of it blue, is a chump-change investment to them. So - they oppose Obamacare, and concomitantly support the tea party types, because the success of Obamacare will achieve for the present Democrats what the New Deal and Social Security achieved for the FDR era Democrats: a popular program that advances the interests of the electorate, with consequent Democratic electoral success. In a nutshell - they oppose Obamacare, not because it is a bad thing, but because it is a good thing. dallasnews/news/local-news/20131005-lengthy-gop-effort-preceded-federal-budget-crisis.ece
