From the Service for Peace group MAN UP: Louisville, KY, Dec. 23rd… This response below came in from an LMPD Sergeant which we felt needed to be heard by our community! “As a white cop, now Police sergeant, who has spent the majority of my 16 years in west Louisville, either on the beat or as a homicide detective, I appreciate the call for support for LMPD. Through my years, I have always felt that 98% of our officers were there to protect the community and try to do good. As for the other 2% that tarnish what our officers stand for, I do not know of a single officer who wants to work with, or be associated with a bad cop. Furthermore, in 16 years of service to the community, I have never met or had a conversation with ANY cop, local or otherwise that ever wanted to shoot another human. In addition, being a cop requires split-second decision making that frankly has almost gotten me shot down had I not made the decision i did. It can be a scary, nerve wracking, boring, frustrating, rewarding and exciting career all at once. And I cant recall a single time I made a call for service for something positive. We always seemed to get called when its bad! Most times cops get it right, however inevitable sometimes we get it wrong. And with every interaction, someone is happy about what we did while a second party is upset. That is the nature of the job. Again, I want to thank you for giving us support. Please know that regardless of how we are treated in the community, we will always be out there to protect and serve those who need our help. The only thing all officers ask the public to understand is, we all have families and we all just want to return home safely after each shift. We are human too, just like the rest of the community. We are part of the community.
